My Philosophy of Spirit
I’ve been wondering about this “spirit” too, even before I started the course of Philosophy 102 with Miss Mira Reyes. I am very interested with these things, the deeper meaning of things, which is why I have been also thinking of things especially this “spirit”. Of course, we all know that the word “spirit” is not merely a word but it encompasses different kinds of meanings. Sometimes this “spirit” has different kinds of meanings based on what we know from written accounts, from what you learn in school, from what other people say to you through their own experiences, from the society you are in, from your own experiences and from your own inner knowledge. I had this notion that we are fully aware of what is the true meaning of “spirit” to ourselves; we just hadn’t opened our eyes enough to see it. We are still blinded by the things we are seeing in the present time. We are overwhelmed of the material things and the physical life in this Earth, but we haven’t even have the time to be overwhelmed what the real meaning of “spirit” and what can it bring to us humans. Before I had this only notion that “spirit” is the ghost that I see. What I mean is the soul of the dead person.
Before I didn’t know that “spirit” is soul. Before when I hear the word spirit, I tremble in fear because my notion about it will be the scary images of “ghosts” that are being portrayed in the media. As I grow up, I have that notion but when I suddenly became mature enough, I realized that I was wrong. I am not totally wrong, because “spirit” is a soul and ghosts came from souls of dead people. When I analyzed that, I was a bit overwhelmed that “spirit” is sometimes the feelings you feel. I never really have the clear idea of how I get the feelings I get, we all know it is emotion but how you get it is the question. That is the time when my other notion of “spirit” came out of my system. I had a notion of “spirit” as a force that drives me to do things according to my own choices or will. At that time, I realized too, that my “spirit” is the one who guides me in picking the right path that will lead me somewhere that I will benefit heart, mind, body and soul.
Even I have some notions of “spirit” before; I am still in awe about this “spirit”. I still have the lust to wonder about it more. As I continue to grow and grow as a person, not in physical means, I wonder if I have this “spirit”. I wonder if I have that driving force to pursue more on uncovering many mysteries in life or even the simple mysteries that we could find in our everyday experiences and movement. For me, “spirit” is a mystery. It has many kinds of meanings depending on what phase of life you are now. I wonder if “spirit” is merely the soul of a person, the soul that guides us, a force, the unseen, the unknown or the divine. There are so many ways that we use the word “spirit” and that actually confuses my mind on finding the true meaning of it inside of me and outside of me. I see people use the word “spirit” to describe the unseen, but I don’t think we don’t really see it. Frankly speaking, I can say that it can be seen; you just have to find it deeper and deeper in things around you, the people around you and even yourself. There is no definite definition for “spirit” because it is transcendent and it cannot be easily defined because it is greater than any other thing.
From my point of view, I see “spirit” as not an earthly phenomenon, feeling or any thing because it is greater than us humans. I think that if we would be able to find the true meaning and doing of “spirit” we will also be transcendent in some ways. We might be able to live peacefully and be able to relate with one another effectively. Nowadays, I don’t seem to find a good definition or meaning because people tend to ignore it. They are more attached to what I said, material things. They are all greedy nowadays. You will find some people who would really try to find what the meaning of “spirit” is. All I can say is that, the “spirit” in our society nowadays are scattered, people in the society have their different meanings of “spirit”. I think I’ll start my own meaning of “spirit” for our society or based in our society right now. “Spirit” is a person, or a thing or a belief that helps people in doing choices and making the right choices that will make everybody benefit from it. It is what I believe, because that is what the society, especially the government and the people under them.
They are really lacking “spirit” because they act according to their own benefit instead of acting according to the benefit of others especially those who are really need of all the help in this society. I have heard and seen many problems that had led me in this kind of meaning of “spirit” based on our society today and I think I am quite right about it, because from every angle that you will, these are the things that our society lacks today. I can add another meaning of “spirit” based on our problems in society. “Spirit” is anything that a person looks for but doesn’t have the definite way of expressing it. What I mean here is, people in our society is looking for something, they said it’s freedom, riches, but are those things the real “things” that people seek nowadays? I think, it is that “spirit”. I think “spirit” is value, a high value; a thing, phenomenon, person or feeling that has a very high value. Those are the meanings of “spirit” according to my everyday life and to the society that I am in.
I’m looking for this “spirit” too. I gave these meanings because I too, have been feeling the lack of my own “spirit”. If I can say it, I think “spirit” is also a sphere that makes you whole, a sphere that will help you know what your real purpose, your real identity as a human. I’m not saying I totally lack these things, but I think at some point in my life, I felt that the “spirit” have left me, once in a while. It seems this “spirit” in me is like a living thing that I wasn’t able to give enough attention to. I don’t know, right now in my life, there are things that happen that I can’t control and some I can fully control. But when that “spirit” is not with me, I am very miserable.
In addition, based on my experiences, “spirit” is a feeling of strength, something that gives you will to do things, to be optimistic and see life as something precious. Also, it is something that gives you a feeling of relief and comforts you whenever you are down or need any help. “Spirit” is the one that you see when you look at the mirror and when you try to judge it positively, you will gain a spiritual energy for yourself because you alone are “spirit”. If you judge yourself in a negative way, you’ll give everyone around you the negative spiritual energy that might give miserable experiences to them.
All in all, a “spirit” is something big, a broad thinking and any thing can be a spirit depending on the philosophy you have on things. It can be bad, depending on the mentality you have or knowledge you have. “Spirit” is everything that we can see and we feel and it might be a collection of the things you know around you. Thus help you to become human in any way of life you have. If you have “spirit” you are whole as a human.
