Green Tea (Aug 17, 2008 8:27 pm)

The main difference between green tea and coffee is, besides the taste and color and smell, the method of production. There is a lot of waste in the production of coffee wherein people who harvest the coffee have to throw away the fruit of the coffee berry order to get a seed which is called the bean. Also coffee beans have to be roasted a great deal more than green tea leaves have to be cured to make a beverage.

In Japan the cultivating of green tea is a cottage industry that is now on the wane. Small green tea farms in Japan are going wild and falling into disuse. It is because the Japanese people wish not to get involved in the production of green tea.

Much of green tea production can be automated from the picking to the curing to the packaging.

That is too bad because green tea is much healthier than coffee. But isn't black tea even better than green tea? I bought some Black Tea several months ago from an asian speciality store here and it was very good.

Pocket Watch (Jul 27, 2008 8:23 pm)

The watch made for Marie Antoinette in the nineteenth century featuring all of the known complication of that time took about forty years to produce. Long after Antoinette's terrible death and after the original creator died the pocket watch was finished. After changing hands it got to into a collection and was put on display in Jerusalem in 1983 where it was stolen.
The company that bears the name of the creator of  Antoinette's pocket watch issued notices about the return of the watch, and so Antoinette's pocket watch has reportedly appeared again in Israel. I am excited to know about the resurfacing of the pocket watch that has a rumored value in excess of $15 million U.S. dollars.
Unfortuntunately, the current keepers of Antoinette's Pocket watch are requiring that the company that originally produced it to pay for the privelege of evaluating it and of authenticating it. Naturally the owner of the company has reacted with dismay at the reticence of Antoinett's pocket watch's keepers to submit their pocket watch to the scrutiny that would put the priceless treasure back on the map for horology buffs such as myself.

Cultured Stones (Jul 01, 2008 4:23 pm)

In the diamond industry, the Debeers cartel basically maintains hegemony and sets prices for the market in spite of the dramatic and recent development of cultured diamond companies in the U.S.A. Those companies are Apollo Diamond and Gemesis which have different, propprietary systems for growning diamonds in their labs. Apollo, of Massachusetts, can grow a carat diamond in about two weeks, and they are adding capacity. Both cultured diamond producers have set their prices at about fifteen percent below those of naturally mined stones in order not to destroy the market for diamonds.
Many interesting articles abound about cultured diamonds.
The inventor and owner of the process for Apollo said that we are in the "daimond age." He said that, because diamond conducts electricity perfectly as long as it doesn't burn up, they are going into the development of semiconductors based on their diamond wafers that Apollo produces by thier CVD process.
In the meantime, Apollo sells their diamonds through the Samuels Jewelry chain, and Gemesis has a list of exclusive ladies'  jewelry  stores. A few of those stores are in New York City.

Digital Ink (Jun 30, 2008 9:35 am)

Imagine having the flexibility of an ink pen and the power of the computer. A computer allows easy copying, handwriting recognition and search for your data among other things, and digital ink brings those functions to the flexible and natural action of an ink pen.
Some programs that allow people the flexibility of an ink pen with Vista operating system are One Note for the the Tablet PC and Pen Plus.
Digital ink is not something that is new. It began as a tool in animation for computer graphics based features from companies like Disney and Pixar.
Today the average computer user has the option of using digital ink to write naturally in ultra mobile personal computers. It is a boon to leave the keyboard at home and to write simply and naturally with a stylus on a computer that has a touch display and that is ultra mobile.

Animal Shelter (Jun 21, 2008 6:53 pm)

I volunteer at a couple of places and I gain work experience as well as human interaction by my efforts. Getting the experience can tax a person at the start of a volunteer committment such as at any job when the stress level goes higher than usual. A degree of mastery is the result.
At the Animal Shelter where I go for two hours per week, I have the charge of critters which are animals other than cats and dogs. They are rabbits, rats, mice, guinea pigs and so on who have been left at the shelter often because of problems with landlords and the critters. I feed the animals lettuce, feed pellets, carrots and tofu in different combinations depending on the animal. I developed attachments to certain animals that stayed at the animal shelter for a long time. It is a great day when one of them gets adopted to a forever home.
