To Whom It May Concern:

It is a genuine pleasure for me to recommend Amber Lopo for your scholarship. Amber is an excellent candidate and at the top of all students that I would recommend.

Amber attended my Spring 2008 Astronomy 110 course at Grossmont College and excelled academically.  As an energetic and involved student, Amber asked intelligent, relevant, and thought provoking questions regarding the course material and led discussions on related topics.  Her passion in astronomy is readily apparent.

Her course work and classroom participation reflect a focused student successful in achieving her desired goals.  Amber’s interest falls in several areas of astronomy, including cosmology and compact objects, and in particular, black holes.

From the discussions I’ve had with Amber, I find that she is well rounded in her interests and is up-to-date on many astronomical events.  Her performance at Grossmont College, and as the valedictorian of her class, has shown her maturity and capability in achieving the highest short- and long-term goals.

She has described future plans to complete the TAH program at Grossmont College and apply to the undergraduate physics programs at UC Berkeley and M.I.T.  She has expresses further interest in obtaining a Master’s or doctorate degree in astrophysics.  I firmly believe that she will realize these goals.  Amber has the requisite self-initiative and is the caliber of student that will do well in the environment of either institution and make important contributions to the field of astronomy.

Sincerely,

Graduation (Jun 01, 2008 5:43 pm)

Amazing, after a long journey I've finally made it. I got a 4.0 in every class I took. I finished two scholarship applications, I got the recommendation of my High school teacher and my Astronomy professor.

YAY!

So here is the scholarship paper I wrote today....

As the prominent Protestant theologian of the 1950's and 1960's, Ralph W. Sockman, once said "The larger the island of knowledge, the longer the shoreline of wonder" and I could not agree more. I aspire to a lifelong pursuit of personal development via the acquisition of knowledge, a crescendo of the perpetual metamorphosis of my mind throughout the rest of my life.

At this juncture in life, I am a recent high school graduate of Foothills Adult School. The experiences afforded to me while attending Foothills has proven to be an invaluable tool for road ahead. My immediate goal for the future is to continue on with my education at Grossmont Community College. I intend signing the TAG agreement and upon completion of the TAG program, I will be transferring to UC Berkeley. My first long term goal, while at Berkeley, is to achieve is my Bachelor of Science degree in Astrophysics. My second long term goal is to complete my Masters and doctorate in Astrophysics.

It would be most befitting to my fancy if I, using abstract thought and technology, were able to discover concrete evidence for something as incredible as dark matter.

For all practical purposes, the Universe is my limit.

This was my professors response when I emailed him today....

Hi Amber,

I can certainly do that.

Talk with me on Saturday about it, ok? I'll
probably have a draft of it and I can clean it up after we talk and
then email it off.

UC Berkeley is a great goal.

I think I told you before, but they are
big in the supernova area of astronomy.

So if that is one of your
interests, you would be in the right place.

If not, let me know what
areas you think you would like to pursue (I know it's early in the
whole process) and maybe I can recommend an additional school or two.

See you Saturday!

Jeff

Which is awesome because he will definitely prove to be an invaluable and can give you so much guidance to me while going to college.
